International Scale of River Difficulty

In case you're interested, this scale provides a general way to standardize difficulty and skill required, though it's not linear. In other words, the classes vary depending on the water flow at any given time. Also, it's not a fixed scale. It does give you a basic idea of what to expect in each class, however, and that's useful.

  • I - small waves, no big obstacles, clear passages
  • II - clear passages but with moderately difficult passages that require more experience and the right gear
  • III - many waves and obstacles (rocks are high and/or irregular), including clear but narrow passages and rapids, much higher expertise required
  • IV - high waves, dangerous rocks, long stretches of rapids, "boiling" eddies, scouting crucial first time out, requires strength and precision for maneuvering and high-caliber equipment
  • V - Very difficult with violent rapids in long stretches that are almost continuous, major drops and pervasive obstructions, includes a steep gradient; should be only undertaken after whatever study is possible (often difficult to do this) and only with highly experienced persons and the right boat and outfit.
  • VI - Also referred to with a "U," this level of river passage is considered unrunnable.
